Chapter Summary

This chapter provides a detailed review of the Analysis capability. The authors draw from several disciplines to provide a definition and characterization of analysis suited to intelligence work. This chapter distinguishes clearly between analysis as a capability and analytics as a tool or a method. The distinction is essential for seeing and leveraging all of the activities involved in analysis, including Blueprint Interpretation, Analytical Method Selection, Model Construction, Source Collection, Source Organization, Source Curation & Cleaning, Testing, Interpretation, Results Assessment, and Model Documentation & Formalization. The chapter highlights the importance of analyzing the whole landscape, seeing all factors, and thinking strategically. This chapter also includes business stories and scenarios from the real world.

Abstract

Kōzō Uno (1897–1977) was a unique Marxist economist in Japan. The Uno's three-stage theory of the capitalist economy, in a certain sense, was a typical framework in the system of Marxist economic theory. But the method in Uno's Principles of Political Economy (“Principles”) is different from Marx's method in “Capital” and systematic critique of political economy. Since Uno rejected a methodological character of “capital in general” in Marx, Uno's “Principles” was a closed system in a circle. The stage theory of capitalistic development, therefore, had no connection with his general theory (“Principles”). Sekisuke Mita (1906–1975) was a severe critic of Uno's methodology. Mita, a Hegelian philosopher, criticized Uno that the methodology of his “Principles” was Hegelism, and pointed out that the method of Uno's stage theory was positivism. Mita not only criticized Uno, but also criticized orthodox views of Marxian economists who had been influenced by Stalinist views. Mita asserted that the rational dialectic in the logic of “Capital” was founded on the analytical method. The central problem is a methodological meaning of the relationship between the universal and the particular. This article describes the points of rational dialectic in the methodology of Marxian political economy, overcoming Hegelism and positivism.

Abstract

This paper studies the pricing of collateralized debt obligation (CDO) using Monte Carlo and analytic methods. Both methods are developed within the framework of the reduced form model. One-factor Gaussian Copula is used for treating default correlations amongst the collateral portfolio. Based on the two methods, the portfolio loss, the expected loss in each CDO tranche, tranche spread, and the default delta sensitivity are analyzed with respect to different parameters such as maturity, default correlation, default intensity or hazard rate, and recovery rate. We provide a careful study of the effects of different parametric impact. Our results show that Monte Carlo method is slow and not robust in the calculation of default delta sensitivity. The analytic approach has comparative advantages for pricing CDO. We also employ empirical data to investigate the implied default correlation and base correlation of the CDO. The implication of extending the analytical approach to incorporating Levy processes is also discussed.

Abstract

The advances and continuous development of technology have been identified as significant influences on the accounting profession (AICPA, 1998). In the last twenty years, both academia and the accounting profession have been giving much attention to the demand and opportunity for audits to be performed automatically, continuously and in nearly real time. This paper presents a comprehensive review of continuous auditing research by providing an overview of the emergence and growth of the continuous auditing literature and classifying the extant continuous auditing research on the basis of four research characteristics indicated by a newly developed research taxonomy.

Abstract

Chapter Summary

In this chapter, the authors build upon the value and the gaps of the traditional model to propose a more strategic and comprehensive framework for designing and conducting intelligence work. The future of intelligence work in the knowledge economy requires a new approach. The new framework includes four primary intelligence capabilities, including design, analysis, automation and operationalize, and accelerate. The framework applies to any organization operating in any economic sector.
