Abstract

Liberalisation and deregulation of financial markets, lower currency volatility and the introduction of the euro have reduced transaction and bankruptcy costs for multinationals in Europe. Internal European transfers of cash have become easier and cheaper. This has enabled the centralisation of cash management activities. The centralisation at headquarters of multinational enterprises has also opened the road to financial disintermediation. These trends may have helped to create conglomerate benefits in Europe. The case of the cash management at the Netherlands‐based Royal Philips Electronics is used to illustrate these tendencies.

Abstract

Purpose: Green consumerism is on the rise in the 21st century, impelling businesses to prioritise environmental awareness and expand eco-products to keep up with the growing demand. This research examines how social media (SM) and moral obligations (MO) affect consumer views and their propensity to make eco-friendly choices.

Methodology: Data were gathered from 508 participants using an adaptive questionnaire. The proposed model was tested using ‘structural equation modelling’.

Findings: The results show that electronic word-of-mouth (EWOM) and the intent to acquire green goods favourably impact consumer behaviour. MO positively influences attitudes and intentions to make green purchases (GPI), with attitudes acting as a mediator between MO and GPI.

Implications: This research is of utmost importance for marketers wanting to enhance their SM communication strategies to influence consumers’ opinions of green products and raise the possibility that they would make environmentally conscious purchases.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of this study is to examine the various factors that exert an influence on the green economy. This study also investigates the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on the Malaysian economy, specifically focusing on its position as a mediator. This research also examines the correlation between FDI and its influence on the contemporary green economy.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors employed quantitative methodologies and a self-administered survey to evaluate data and derive a definitive conclusion. The result was constructed using SPSS and SEM-PLS as the analytical software.

Findings

The study reveals that technological advancement, investment country and government policy significantly and positively affect the green economy, catalyse SDG goals and restructure the economy in better shape.

Originality/value

The current empirical research bridges the research gap in the context of technology advancement in government policy from emerging economies by exploring important factors, proposing their impact on the performance of the green economy, and empirically testing those hypothesized relationships. This study deciphers that FDI influences the green economy, where the investment country plays a significant role. Also, for a graphical presentation of this abstract, see the online appendix.

Abstract

Aspects of the organizational culture of four universities, two in Japan and one each in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, are discussed and compared. The paper argues that organizations established in countries sharing similarities in national cultures are likely to be characterized by similar values, beliefs, and assumptions, in short, that similarities in national cultures are likely to nurture similarities in organizational cultures. Japan and Arab countries are similar with respect to several cultural dimensions; thus, the organizational cultures of the four universities are expected to reflect such similarities. While the findings provide some support to the “culture‐bound” position it is nevertheless premature to entirely dismiss the “culture‐free” argument, as aspects of organizational culture in the universities examined appear to be the product of organizational variables rather than socio‐cultural factors.

Abstract

Purpose

This chapter offers a critical outline of the Egyptian feminist movement. It traces the forms of feminist activism and the demands raised by Egyptian feminists throughout the twentieth century and into the new millennium.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses the tools of feminist theory and women’s history in charting a critical outline of the Egyptian women’s movement and feminist activism throughout a century of Egyptian history. The study attempts to identify the main features of the movement in terms of the demands raised by women and the challenges and achievements involved within the socio-political national and international contexts.

Findings

The Egyptian feminist movement is divided here into four waves, highlighting the intersections between feminist demands and national demands, as well as Egyptian women’s struggle for their rights. The first wave is seen as focusing on women’s right to public education and political representation. The second wave is marked by women’s achievement of constitutional and legal rights in the context of state feminism. The third wave is characterised by feminist activism in the context of civil society organising. The fourth wave has extended its struggle into the realm of women’s bodies and sexuality.

Research implications/limitations

The study limits itself to forms of women’s agency and feminist activism in the public sphere.

Originality/value

This chapter is an original attempt at outlining the Egyptian women’s movement based on the demands raised and challenges faced. The chapter also suggests the existence of a sense of continuity in the Egyptian women’s movement.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between corporate governance and firm performance of listed Ghanaian companies.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper adopts a longitudinal and cross-sectional data set of 20 sampled companies over a period of five years. The data were analyzed using a panel regression and ANOVA analysis to establish the relationship between corporate governance and firm performance. Corporate governance is defined in terms of three indices – board structure, ownership structure and corporate control, while firm performance is measured by return on assets, return on equity, net profit margin and Tobin’s Q.

Findings

The empirical results show that ownership concentration and female representation on board have a positive impact on performance. Although the results revealed no evidence to support the impact of board size and audit committee size on performance, there is significant evidence to support the fact that independent directors and audit committee frequency both adversely affect firm performance.

Research limitations/implications

The scope of this paper can be expanded to include non-listed firms. In addition, other corporate governance mechanisms could be considered to broaden the scope of the paper.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the scarce literature on corporate governance and firm performance in developing countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. The paper provides useful information that is of great value to policymakers, academics and other stakeholders.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify and screen continuous innovation capability enablers (CICEs) in Indonesia’s manufacturing sectors, develop a relationship among these enablers and determine their driving power and dependence power in the sector.

Design/methodology/approach

The initial CICEs identification process is based on a literature review, while a fuzzy Delphi method (FDM) was used for the screening process of CICEs. Total interpretive structural modelling (TISM) was used to develop contextual relationships among various CICEs. The results of the TISM are used as an input for the matrix of cross-impact multiplications applied to classification (MICMAC) to classify the driving power and dependence powers of the CICEs.

Findings

This paper selected 16 CICEs classified in seven dimensions. TISM results and MICMAC analysis show that leadership, as well as climate and culture, are enablers with the highest driving power and lowest dependence powers; followed by information technology. The results of this study indicate that efforts to continuously develop innovation capabilities in the Indonesian manufacturing industries are strongly influenced by their leadership capability, climate and culture, also information technology-related capability.

Practical implications

The framework assessed in this study provides business managers and policymakers to obtain a bigger picture in developing policies with evidence-based strategy and priority in regard to continuous innovation capability.

Originality/value

The results will be useful for business managers and policymakers to understand the relationship between CICEs and identify key CICEs in Indonesia’s manufacturing sectors, which were previously non-existent.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to conceptualise a customer-centric model based on an online customer experience (OCE) construct, mediated by e-loyalty (EL) and e-trust (ET), to improve the continuous usage intention (CUI) of Indian digital banks from Generation Y and Z perspectives.

Design/methodology/approach

This study used an online survey method to gather data from a sample of 466 digital banking users, from which usable questionnaires were obtained. The obtained data were subjected to thorough analysis using PLS-SEM to further study the research hypotheses.

Findings

The main factors that determine digital banks’ OCE are perceived enjoyment, e-service quality, information quality and e-convenience. Additionally, relevant constructs were evaluated using an importance-performance map analysis.

Research limitations/implications

This study used convenience sampling for the urban population using digital banking; therefore, the outcome may be generalised to a limited extent. It would be valuable to imitate studies in other countries to strengthen digital banking further.

Originality/value

There is a lack of research on digital banking and OCE in India; thus, this study helps rectify this issue while providing valuable insights. This study differs from others in that it examines the connections between OCE, EL, ET and the bottom line of financial institutions, using these factors as dependent variables instead of traditional measures.
