It came to me the other day that what we do in the productivity improvement business is to tell other people how to run parts of their lives. We do this based on our experience and our use of particular techniques and approaches to the analysis of work and working systems. I just quietly asked myself the question as to whether this (basis) was enough – or is there a degree of arrogance there also. Do it like this because I say so – and I am important. First thought was that this could not be so … but second thought was that perhaps the best consultants and change agents need a degree of "presence" and "authority" to fulfil their role. Now, what is the best test for arrogance in new recruits to the profession?
