No goals

No goals

Recent findings from a Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development survey show that 84 per cent of respondents believe their organisations are not effective at developing business plans that specify the management capabilities required, while 30 per cent do not even have business plans. The investigation of 433 UK organisations shows that current management development practice is disconnected from the business objectives in the majority of companies.

Key findings from the research:

  • Companies tend to develop their managers either to deliver current performance or to develop new strategies. They need to do both to sustain competitiveness.

  • Senior managers see integrating management development with the implementation of company goals as a top priority, and yet few achieve this.

  • Simply doing more management development, or improving management qualifications is not the answer to the UK management problem.

Internal management courses were seen as the more effective ones. Least effective were external seminars, conferences, distance learning and Internet packages.
