Over the last few years, the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) has become increasingly involved with international trade development in close co-operation with, initially, the UK's Department of Trade and Industry's Overseas Trade Board and more recently with British Trade International's Trade Partner's UK and Invest UK Sections. To enable British telecommunications companies around the world, TIA is continuing to expand its "Telecom Partners" programme. Starting originally in Germany, Telecom Partners is now the Association's key initiative for the development of international trade opportunities for the UK industry globally. The TIA Telecom Partners scheme includes the identification and promotion of opportunities in specific countries, the participation in overseas exhibitions and trade missions and, now the new TIA "Telecom Partners" Overseas Memberships. "Telekom Partners Germany", set up in 1997 has had remarkable success with over 500 companies being introduced to the German market and achieving well over £20m of additional business. UK companies benefit from meetings between buyers and sellers, personal introductions, and trade missions to coincide with major exhibitions. With the support of Trade Partners UK and the commercial section of the British Embassy in France, TIA launched "Telecom Partners France" at last year's "Networld and Interop" Exhibition in Paris. Then, by the end of 2001, TIA had replicated the Telecoms Partners scheme in Italy, Europe's fourth largest telecoms market. For details see www.tia.org.uk
