DP-BS 7988, a code of practice for the use of information technology in the delivery of assessments

Colleges, universities, schools and businesses are increasingly using computers to deliver exams and assessments in place of pen and paper. The standard will set guidelines to follow so that students know they will be treated fairly and so that organisations can trust and rely on the results of computer-delivered assessments (John Kleeman of Question Mark Computing, committee chairman, British Standards).

The use of computers in exams is increasing dramatically and, with it, new ways of cheating. This publication will be essential to all organisations that deliver tests, assessments or exams by computer. These include universities, exam boards, schools and colleges, as well as employers and training companies.

The publication introduces guidelines and minimum requirements for any organisation that uses computers to make assessments and ensures they establish a good code of practice for delivering them.

To comply with the new standard, organisations running exams will need to have effective methods to verify online candidates who may be at remote locations. The publication will also give guidelines on providing practice tests for candidates, taking mandatory breaks from the screen, and preventing screen-snooping, cribbing work, sending e-mails, and accessing Web sites.
