Music to my ears

Music to my ears

In an idle moment (and there are not many of those) I got to musing about the history of work and music. In the UK, during the Second World War, the radio (or "wireless" as it was then called) broadcast a programme called Music While You Work designed to lift morale and help productivity. This ran for many years eventually being superseded by the constant pop music of today's radio stations. We then had the "muzak" development which attempted to form a link between certain types of music and individual performance. Now there is little "scientific" study of the relationship of music to performance at work – surely a neglected area. If any researcher is working in this area, I would be delighted to hear of any results.
