Keep them miserable

Unfortunately, I cannot remember where – so you will have to take my word for it – but I read recently that, contrary to the received wisdom, keeping employees happy and contented does not make them more productive. On the contrary, employees who are somewhat unhappy with their lot are more likely to deliver hard work and effective performance. It said something about happy employees being less focused and more distracted. So you know what to do – just do not tell your employees that it was me who told you.
