Performance management

Performance management

I recently came across a small engineering company that is still using financial bonus schemes like those I designed in the 1970s. It is still using them because it finds them effective as performance measurement and control devices, rather than as motivators – although they do help in retaining staff. As the world has gone "macro" and, quite rightly, looked at systems, processes and technology as means of improving performance and productivity, it (we!) should remember that micro techniques and approaches can have a significant impact – and certainly both should be considered together.
