The public sector is under pressure – to adopt the best practices of the private sector … and to avoid the worst excesses. It has been changing for several years but the pace of change is still accelerating. This book outlines the strategic approaches to change that are appropriate to the public sector and addressees the major issues involved. Of course, some of the change is externally imposed – especially by legislation, government targets, league tables and the like. Public sector managers are becoming more accountable, they are expected to deliver innovation as well as solid, effective services and they are expected to become consumer-oriented to deliver key government targets such as shorter waiting lists and response times. This can be a culture shock to established managers but they are responding to the call. This book is an additional resource that might help them recognise some of the more difficult problem areas, and help them further in tackling such issues.
