Out-of-office update
A group of employees of financial advisers Ernst & Young in the UK, the USA and The Netherlands were the world's first to have been issued with WAP handsets to access information from the company's network while roaming between the three countries. The trials were conducted over Vodafone's UK network and the networks of its majority owned subsidiary Libertel in The Netherlands and its joint venture with Bell Atlantic in the USA, Verizon Wireless. The ten individuals involved in the trial were able to access Lotus Notes, calendar, address and e-mail functions, Vodafone said. The request reached the company's content server via a Vodafone WAP gateway and the Internet. The server returned WAP-compatible information back to the handset over the same path. Soon, we will all have such functionality.
