More brothers (but mainly sisters)

The TUC (Trades Union Congress) has seen its membership rise for the first time in 19 years. The increase is owing to new affiliations, but in line with the Government's Labour Force Survey, the figures also show that the membership of existing TUC unions has estabilised after 19 years of decline - and that this is largely owing to union success in recruiting women. Total TUC membership stands at more than 6.74 million - an increase of just over 110,000 on the previous year's figures. A total of 34 unions reported an increase in membership, while 32 reported a decrease. The increase in members is almost exclusively among women (96 per cent) - and even without the new affiliations, TUC membership among women has increased by 22,000.
