The Boots Company and Mitsubishi Corporation have signed a lease to open their first Boots Health and Beauty store in Japan. The store is opening in the Omotesando area of Tokyo this summer. The area is one of the most popular shopping destinations in Japan.
The company appointed store staff in May and has given each employee time for training before working in the new store.
Under a joint venture signed last summer, Boots and the Mitsubishi Corporation are investing y5 billion (£26 million, shared 51 per cent Boots, 49 per cent Mitsubishi) in a trial over the next two years. Four pilot stores are planned to open in Tokyo this year. The stores will be around 400sqm in size and situated in prime retail locations.
The Health and Beauty format closely resembles Boots The Chemists UK stores in appearance and layout, stocking OTC medicines and a wide range of fragrance, cosmetics and toiletries. Merchandise will include international brands, established local products and major Boots Brands such as No. 7 cosmetics and Natural Collection toiletries. Boots has already reformulated and registered over 1,300 of its own brands for sale in Japan.
