Fiat is to help fund Italy's first automotive engineering degree programme, as part of its centenary celebrations this year. Working in conjunction with Turin Politecnico, Fiat is to establish one of the few courses in the world devoted exclusively to teaching and research in the automotive field. Fiat is investing $27.1 million in the project, to help purchase, renovate and equip a 10,000 sq metre building in the Lingotto Complex in Turin. The EU has given the project a further $12.3 million under the revitalisation scheme. Once the degree programme is up and running, Fiat will contribute up to $2.8 million a year over the next ten years to help with the funding of both the full and associate courses. Employees of Fiat and its suppliers will make up a fifth of the teaching staff, with international automotive experts hired to teach on a contract basis. Fiat's intention is to produce "atypical engineers" who not only have a thorough knowledge of the manufacturing process, but also an in-depth understanding of the industry.
