Business process re‐engineering has been hailed as the answer to many of the challenges faced by businesses in the late 1990s, yet many organisations seem to have failed with their re‐engineering programmes and the topic no longer seems “hot”. Either the concept was flawed in the first place or something has been going wrong at the implementation stage. Michael Loh is a believer in re‐engineering (indeed, he is considered something of a re‐engineering “guru” in Singapore) and his basic premise is that when it fails, the root cause is most often that insufficient attention has been paid to the human element. Re‐engineering means a complete change in the organisation ‐ and this includes the culture and behaviour of the people involved. Loh sets out a simple four‐stage framework for introducing a successful re‐engineering programme. Using examples from a wide range of organisations with many different cultures, he explains what is involved at each stage, and shows how to align the aspirations of the individual with the goals of the organisation to secure genuine commitment. This is a new, updated edition of the book, in paperback for the first time. Among the new material are chapters on information technology as an enabler, and on the Asian experience.
