Caring for Places of Worship
Article Type: Recent publications From: International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance, Volume 29, Issue 1
England has some 14,500 listed places of worship. These iconic buildings are mostly Church of England churches (85 per cent), Catholic churches, Methodist, Baptist, United Reformed and other Nonconformist chapels, Jewish synagogues and Quaker meeting houses. As part of their Heritage at Risk programme English Heritage have carried out a sample survey to find out how many places of worship are “at risk” from serious disrepair. They talked to congregations across the country who care for places of worship, to find out what challenges they are facing and have published a practical guide for congregations. Both the survey and guide are available at: www.english-heritage.org.uk/publications/caring-for-places-of-worship
