is the recipient of the journal's Outstanding Paper Award for Excellence for his paper

"What is the moisture meter trying to tell us?"

which appeared in Structural Survey , Vol. 20 No. 5, 2002

Ralph Burkinshaw has been working in surveying and hands-on construction since the mid-1970s, and spent much of the past 13 years as a Senior Lecturer in Building Surveying at South Bank University. His specialisation is now dampness investigation, and he wrote with Mike Parrett the recently published textbook: Diagnosing Damp by RICS Books. In addition to carrying out specialist investigations, Ralph conducts practical experiments and tests on surveying equipment and materials, and is currently testing how various sensors monitor changes in moisture condition of some key building materials. Ralph also now runs regular dampness investigation training days at the National Flood School, Farnham, and is also now offering practical seminars in dampness investigation techniques at the former Royal Naval College, University of Greenwich.
