A successful prosecution of five people brought by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has resulted in one defendant receiving a nine-month prison sentence and four others paying fines and costs totalling £98,000. This is the second (and longest) custodial sentence following conviction under the HSE's asbestos regulations.

The prosecution arose from the removal of brown asbestos from the premises of Rollco Screw and Rivet Co., of Blews Street, Aston, Birmingham, between 20 and 29 September 1997. The HSE have said, "In addition to paying a fine of £40,000 and costs of £30,000, Rollco Screw and Rivet Co. had to pay £50,000 to get the work done properly, lost six weeks' production and has had its credit rating adversely affected. Lives have been put at risk because of the casual attitude taken by these people". Rollco Screw and Rivet Co. and M & M Joyce Ltd both pleaded guilty to the charges brought by the HSE.
