A contract from BAE SYSTEMS to supply the pressure sensors for the Sting Ray lightweight torpedo has been won by Polaron Schaevitz. The British anti-submarine torpedo is being upgraded in a life extension programme that will give it significantly enhanced capability.

The novel design of the polaron depth sensor enables a single sensor to measure both high and low pressures. By incorporating a patented overtravel stop, the low range sensing element is able to withstand the much greater pressures encountered at the depths required to be measured by the high range element.

“Performance and reliability were key operational characteristics demanded by BAE SYSTEMS”, said Steve Couchman, Polaron Schavitz's managing director. “In awarding the £1 million contract particular attention was paid to Polaron's quality and validation processes”.

The Schaevitz pressure and displacement sensor lines were acquired by the Watford-based Polaron group in 2002. “This order is an excellent example of the benefits of strong company backing,” stated Polaron's chief executive Joe Stelzer. “Schaevitz has an excellent pedigree and we are delighted to be giving it the strength to thrive in an increasingly demanding marketplace.”

The contract with BAE SYSTEMS runs for a minimum of 10 years.
