Radiatron announces two new families of long life optical encoders, aimed at high quality user interfaces or high reliability positional feedback applications (see Plate 9). The E93 absolute encoders and the E94 relative encoders share the same 10 million rotation life contactless optical mechanism, which uses magnetic detents for a consistent and easily customised "feel", combined with long operating life. Both types are available with and without axial push-button action, and with a wide range of detent force, detent number, and output options. The optional microcontroller based interface enables the E93/E94 to plug directly into RS232, CAN or I2C bus applications, with other bus interfaces available through Radiatron's custom engineering team.

The E93/E94 provide a rated life of more than 10 million rotations, or 30 million rotations without detents, and are available with straight or right-angled pcb pins or flying lead connections. Output is available either direct, in a number of standard code formats, or as an analogue signal to replace traditional potentiometers. There are also options for control signals such as Chip Select and Chip Ready, with open collector outputs being rated up to 50V and able to source 20mA and sink 25mA. Designed for use in 5V powered systems, an optional built-in regulator matches the E93/E94 to any supply from 5V to 26V.

The compact 30mm x 30mm x 30mm body has a standard 6mm shaft, and is available in either central nut fixing or screw mount versions, and is specified to operate from -20°C to + 70°C.
