On-chip integrated signal conditioning with Honeywell's new humidity sensors

Keywords Honeywell, Sensors, Humidity, Moisture

Honeywell's new range of high performance, chemically resistant, relative humidity sensors offer signal conditioning and a thermoset capacitive element to simplify electrical design-in and ensure high accuracy (+2%RH) and fast response in demanding environments. Typical applications include dew point and other absolute moisture measurement, instrumentation and high volume OEM use (see Plate 5).

Plate 5 Honeywell's high performance, relative humidity sensors offer signal conditioning and a thermoset capacitive element to simplify electrical design-in and ensure high accuracy and fast response in demanding environments

The HIH 3600 Series integrated CMOS humidity sensor combines a sensing element with built-in signal conditioning and linearisation circuitry on-chip with the RH capacitor. On-board signal conditioning reduces product development times while laser trimmed interchangeability eliminates the need for system level calibration. The output signal is a DC voltage, linear with %RH and ratiometric to the supply voltage. A typical current supply of 200 µA at 5 VDC makes the sensor suitable for battery powered systems. Operating range is 0 to 100% RH, non-condensing, within a temperature range of -40°C to +85°C.

The sensor construction consists of a planar capacitor with a second polymer layer to protect against dirt, dust, oils and other hazards. Three basic sensor packages are available: a monolithic IC humidity device with an integral precision Resistance Temperature Detector in a TO-5 housing with a hydrophobic sintered stainless steel filter, an integrated circuit humidity sensor in a TO-39 housing and an IC humidity sensor with 0.1 inch lead pitch Single In-Line Package (SIP).
