Omron has set a new standard in colour mark sensing (Plate 2), this time with the launch of the E3M-V sensor. The user-friendly, state-of-the-art device detects colour marks on most surfaces including laminated or light dispersing objects, giving stable operation immune to mirror reflection.

Dependable detection of marks on laminated sheets has traditionally proved problematic, but the E3M-V tackles just such applications highly reliably. In addition, its newly designed coaxial optical system ensures accurate, reliable sensing and stable operation for objects that are distance-fluctuating or inclined at an angle. The E3M-V also offers stable detection of light dispersing objects, providing twice the range of some other sensors.

Set-up of the device is simplified by an auto-teaching function, which automatically sets the threshold value on a remote control input while the workpiece is moving - there is no need to position the mark at the optical spot. Furthermore, one-point and two-point teaching is also possible for remote control inputs. Both the detection and threshold levels are displayed for easy confirmation of the margin and to enable the threshold value to be fine-tuned.

The E3M-V couples a high response speed of 50us with a highly compact package to give a high performance, space saving design. An M12 rotary connector makes it easy to mount the sensor in any location, and the E3M-V is water resistant to IP67.
