Context and GammaSite collaborate on legal taxonomy

Electronic publisher Context Ltd is to be the first legal publisher to use GammaSite's automatic categorisation software, GammaWare. The partnership will enable Context to construct and maintain taxonomies in the legal information field and offer improved search facilities to its customers.

GammaWare automatically categorises documents using subject terms drawn from predefined taxonomies, enabling the quick and effective search and retrieval of critical information. The software also enables complete human editorial control of the taxonomy-building process.

Context's initial project using GammaWare involves building a case law taxonomy in order to classify case reports. Context is categorising archive material, as well as all new cases as they are published. This process will provide, for the first time, a fully searchable subject matter index, which will be available through Context's new legal citatory service, JustCite.

Commenting on the collaboration between Context and GammaSite, Bernadette Jansen Op De Haar, Context's project director, said: "This exciting partnership will significantly improve our customers' ability to find relevant information quickly by allowing them to carry out more precise subject searches. GammaWare's categorisation software also perfectly complements Context's automatic hypertext linking technology in adding value to our content in unique and innovative ways."

GammaSite's CEO, Amir Klausner, added: "The ability to relate case reports to legal topics is essential for lawyers, as it allows them to find cases relevant to the work at hand. GammaSite's automatic classification system is specially designed to yield excellent results when categorising legal information. Through our partnership, Context will be able to offer enhanced access to information, providing its customers with significant added value."

Context's future plans for GammaWare include using the software to categorise its Justis UK Statutes database. As well as offering improved keyword searching, this will allow Justis subscribers to search for and browse statutes by subject, as well as by year.
