Billion Tree Campaign to grow into the seven billion campaign
Article Type: News From: Management of Environmental Quality: An International Journal, Volume 19, Issue 6
The United Nations Environment Programme and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) launched the Billion Tree Campaign in 2006 in order to respond to the sustainability challenges posed by global warming, water supplies and biodiversity loss. To date, the campaign has broken every target set and has catalysed tree planting in close to 155 countries, reaching two billion trees, (double its original target). On the basis that tree planting remains one of the most cost-effective means for addressing climate change, the campaign is now calling on individuals, communities, business, industry, civil society organisations and governments to evolve this initiative to an even higher level before the 2009 Copenhagen climate change conference.
