New EU award to encourage greener cities

The European Commission has launched a new award to recognise European cities that are “leading the way with environmentally friendly urban living”. The “European Green Capital” will “enable cities to inspire each other and share best practices” and “bring advantageous side-effects such as increased tourism, more investment and an influx of young professionals,” the commission says. The award was unveiled on world biodiversity day. Winning cities for 2010 and 2011 will be announced later this year.
