Spain’s coast “disappearing under concrete”

One-third of Spain’s coastline has now been built on and the rate of growth of artificial land surface is accelerating, according to a report published last week by the Spanish Sustainability Observatory (OSE). Overall there has been a 41 per cent increase in artificial land surface since 1987 according to the report, based principally on satellite observation. The main culprit is housing. Speculation and the demand for second homes on the coast saw 812,294 new dwellings built in Spain last year, more than in Germany, France and Britain combined.
