Training for the new library network

Training for the new library network

It has been recognised that for the "People's network" to become a reality, front line staff in public libraries need to receive training on the use of IT, including hardware and relevant software, effective navigation around the Internet, management of electronic resources, and supporting readers to ensure they use those resources effectively. It comes as very welcome news therefore to hear that £20m has been made available from the New Opportunities Fund to make that happen (LA Record, September 1999, p. 499).

The training to be provided will overlap at least partially with the European Computer Driving Licence (another recognised certificate in IT competence, which at the University of Derby we are currently evaluating for student use), and with the Level 2 S/NVQ in Using Information and Technology, which is good news for staff who have already pursued other training routes.

Applications for an allocation of the funding should have been in during September 1999, and library services should receive the results in April 2000. Other services can partake in later years.
