A new look at race equality

A new look at race equality

Impact, the journal of the Career Development Group, published an article in the May 1998 edition by Ayub Khan on the range of equal opportunities issues which are still confronting black librarians. Khan gives a fresh perspective on the open meeting for African, Asian and Caribbean Library workers, hosted by the Library Association last year, and mentioned previously in this column. Many issues were identified on the day, several of which relate to professional education and career development.

These included suggestions of a national mentoring scheme for under-represented groups; the promotion to employers and library managers of the best possible practice when it comes to recruitment and selection; the active encouragement of black workers into the profession; much greater visibility for black professionals in the delivery of professional training courses, and a fuller integration of equal opportunities awareness into all courses.

As a follow-up, there will be a one day conference on 30 November 1998 at Library Association Headquarters, run by the Equal Opportunities Sub-Committee, on "The Black contribution to British librarianship". The fee for attendance will be just £10.00. Details are available from the LA on Tel: 0171 636 7543.
