This double issue of the journal contains our regular sections and selected submitted papers which cover the whole range of our contribution to cybernetics, systems and management sciences. It also includes a special feature devoted to the increasingly important area of Organizational Cybernetics.

This is a subject area that has previously been studied in these pages and was recently the basis of successful sessions held at the 15th Congress of the World Organisation of Systems and Cybernetics (WOSC), held in Nanjing, China.

We are indebted to Professor Raul Espejo, the recently appointed Director-General of WOSC, for arranging this special feature. Our thanks are also extended to the contributing authors who accepted our invitation to participate in its compilation.

Readers should note that in addition to our usual regular journal copy, special issues and features will also continue to be published.

The next special double issue, Nos 5/6 will be devoted to reports, summaries and selected papers presented at the 15th International Congress on Cybernetics and Systems of WOSC joint with the 2011 IEEE International Conference on Grey Systems and Intelligent Services (Nanjing, China, September 2011).
