Article Type: Communications and forum From: Kybernetes, Volume 39, Issue 7

Dr Rodney E. Donaldson, President of the American Society for Cybernetics from 1992 to 1994, died quietly in his home in Port Angeles, Washington State, on 13 November 2009, at age 58.

Dr Donaldson was President of Crazy Tiger Institute for the Cultivation of Living Systemic Understanding and Design, in Seattle, Washington, and a Professor of Whole Systems Design at Antioch University, Seattle for ten years. He was the creator of the Official Gregory Bateson Archive housed at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and of its six-volume “Guide/Catalog” (1982). He also edited a volume of essays by Gregory Bateson entitled Sacred Unity: Further Steps to an Ecology of Mind (Harper Collins, 1997).

He was considered to be one of the world’s foremost authorities on the works of Gregory Bateson and Humberto Maturana and devoted great efforts to ensuring that these mentors’ intellectual legacies survived.

He is sadly missed by his former students, and a tribute by Jenny Manes, who describes herself as a student and friend, was circulated to both the ASC membership and the CYBCOM discussion list on 19 April 2010. Archives of the CYBCOM list can be found at: https://hermes.gwu.edu/archives/cybcom.html
