18th European Meeting on Cybernetics and Systems Research - 2006

The 18th EMCSR'6, organized by the Österreichische Studiengesellschaft für Kybernetik (ASCS) was held at the University of Vienna from April 18 to 21, 2006 in cooperation with the Medical University of Vienna and IFSR.

The opening ceremony, on Tuesday 18, involved welcomes by the Rectors of the University and Medical University of Vienna, an official opening by the Federal Minister for education, science and culture and the Vice-Chancellor and Federal Minister for transport innovation and an address by Prof. Robert Trappl, Chairman of the meeting, President of ASCS. Then Prof. Gerhard Widmer gave a plenary lecture on “Intelligent computing for music and musicology”. In the evening, Prof. Manfred Clynes proposed. “An interpretation of two masterworks – hearing the computing becoming natural”.

The Proceedings were given on the first day in two volumes containing the comunications of around 225 authors, mainly from: Austria, USA, Italy, Czech Republic, Germany, UK, Belgium, Finland, France, Slovenia. The papers were distributed into 15 symposia devoted to: Systems science (Chairs: G. Klir, P. Prautsch), Mathematical methods in cybernetics and systems theory (Y. Rav, J. Scharinger), The cybernetics of cybernetics (R. Glanville), Living systems theory (G. Swanson, K. Samuelson), Biocybernetics and mathematical biology (L. Ricciardi), Systems science in medicine (F. Tretter, G. Ossimitz, G. Porenta), Cultural systems (M.Fisher, D. Read), Cognitive rationality, relativity and clarity (P. Ballonoff, I. Ezkhova), Management, organizational change and innovation (M. Mulej), Soft computing and knowledge-based systems (C. Carlso, K.-P. Adlassnig), Artificial neural networks and adaptive systems (G. Dorffher), From Agent theory to agent implementation (J. Muller, P. Petta), Agent construction and emotions (J. gratch, S. Marsella, P. Petta), Agent-based modeling and simulation (S. Blandini, G. Vizzari), Theory and application of artificial intelligence (V. Marik, E. Buchberger).

On Friday 21, after the presentation of the best paper awards, a plenary lecture was given by Prof. G.L. Clore on “Affective guidance of intelligent agents: how emotion controls cognition”. In the evening participants were invited to a Heurigen. As usual the congress was successful.
