Pioneer Weston's new PTFE shaft seals allow Oem's to produce smaller, faster and more reliable machines at a lower cost

Pioneer Weston has introduced a new range of PTFE based rotary shaft seals that offer extended life in high-speed machines and applications where conventional rubber seals are not effective. The range covers seals with a variety of lip and casing configurations to cover most environmental and installation conditions (Plate 5).

Pioneer Weston has employed the latest filled grades of PTFE to produce their new range of shaft seals which offer a longer operational life than those manufactured using traditional filled grades. Common to the whole range is an extended lip element that lies flat against the shaft to provide a greater sealing contact area which prevents shaft grooving, a common problem with rubber seals. This flexible element allows for greater shaft misalignment and vibration than previously possible, making the seals ideal for use in all types of engines, mixers, gearboxes, and pump applications.

For specialist high-speed applications, Pioneer Weston has developed new hydrodynamic lip variations which feature a unique spiral seal element designed to pump fluid continually away from the contact surface. Oil slips along multithread channels take heat away from the lip, thus increasing operating life and prevent seal failures associated with oil carbonisation.

Where environmental contamination is a problem, an additional PTFE shielding element is employed to prevent any ingress reaching the main sealing lip(s). These seals are ideal for use in applications ranging from cosmetics manufacturing to food processing systems and many others, which include the handling of F.D.A grade materials.

Flexible manufacturing and assembly techniques allow Pioneer Weston to offer a choice of casing design to suit the volume of seals or lead times required. For example, solid body type seals are used for low-volume production runs, these incorporate the PTFE element rolled or crimped directly into a fully machined alloy case, removing the need for costly press tooling, and also reducing lead- times. For high volumes, where press-tooling costs become negligible, seals are manufactured with a shell type construction, which can also be rubber covered depending on the fluid pressure to be sealed and installation factors.

Pioneer Weston also provides PTFE elements that can be positioned directly into a machined cast housing to produce an end plate or casing with integral seal as a single item; offering faster production/assembly techniques and advantages in terms of space, spares, retrofitting and even weight saving.
