British Gear Association generic gear research know-how up for industry grabs

British Gear Association generic gear research know-how up for industry grabsKeywords: British Gear Association

The research committee of the British Gear Association in the last 12 months has completed three of eight projects which have been initiated, and whilst generic knowledge is disseminated to the industry, the project partners retain commercially orientated material for a pre-determined period to provide an effective return on their investment.

The BGA, in its annual report, emphasises that project results are tailored to suit the project subject and collaborating partners' needs. The benefit of taking part in the research work is not just confined to obtaining the project results, but also from the discussions and deliberations between suppliers, manufacturers, users and academics, throughout the length of the project.

The BGA say their individual research programmes are directed and monitored by working groups formed from the contributing participants and under guidance from the research management team which is supported by representatives from the DTI, EPSRC, MOD and universities.

The eight research projects range from improving worn gear performance and reduction of transmission error to improving the understanding of micropitting and net forgings of gears.

Apart from work emanating from existing projects, subjects being considered include scuffing, form grinding, plastic gears, dynamic performance of transmission systems, Barkhausen noise and splines.

Two items of software, designed to provide better stress analysis tools for the gear designer, jointly funded by the DTI and BGA's research committee, have been finished at the Newcastle Design Unit.

The results of these projects are commercially available at very much reduced rates to BGA members.
