The Debswana Diamond Company (Pty) Limited has made significant savings in maintenance costs by using PQ ferrous debris monitoring equipment supplied by Analex International. The company recently purchased a PQM monitor and has already been able to reduce equipment down-time and prevent unexpected failures by performing quicker analysis of oil samples.

Speaking about the benefits of the PQM, Bobby Kerr, Engineering Technical Analyst at the Debswana Diamond Company, said, "In the short time that our Earthmoving Technical Support Section has been running we have saved considerable amounts of money. Our PQM unit has proved time after time how effective it can be as a maintenance tool; for instance, recent data helped to save the rear axle on one of our caterpillar haul trucks."

The PQ range of laboratory and portable instruments enable users to conduct rapid, on-site analysis of ferrous debris in used oil samples to provide an early warning of mechanical problems. With more than 400 installations in 35 countries, PQ analysis is an established method used by major oil companies world-wide.

The Debswana Diamond Company is a joint venture between De Beers Centenary and the Botswana Government, operating three mines which include the world's largest and the world's richest. Its total production in 1999 was estimated at 21.7 million carats, accounting for approximately 29 percent of global diamond sales.
