Oil sump monitor measures oil build-up

Keywords: Oils, Monitoring

Ionics have announced a range of Leakwise systems specially designed to continuously monitor and control the build-up of oil levels in wet or dry sumps, separators and retention tanks. They have wide applications in the petrochemical and power industries.

Highly sensitive, the Leakwise can give a direct measurement of oil thickness and oil build-up over time. A floating electromagnetic absorption sensor sits at the oil/water interface, unaffected by the presence of the oil it is designed to detect (see Plate 3).

Sensors for a range of sump applications are available. These include sensors that can be suspended from above the water surface or alternatively are fixed to the floor of an emptying sump. The latter uses a reed switch to indicate whether the sump is empty or at a predetermined minimum level.

Leakwise oil-on-water detectors are simple to install and require a minimum of maintenance. They can be used to actuate alarms, skimmers, discharge pumps and other control equipment.
