The British Gear Association is supporting an MSc course at Cranfield University with five to six places for this October's intake.

The BGA has been engaged in identifying an MSc course in support of the mechanical power transmission industry and after an extensive survey has decided to back the MSc Design of Rotating Machines course.

The course, which is 24 months part time, has been in operation for over 25 years and has been developed to meet the industrial needs of engineering graduates with specialist skills in the design of complex engineering systems, especially those involving rotation, such as gas turbines, power generating equipment and pumps.

MSc candidates' syllabus will include a gear design module and an associated assignment, each lasting approximately 32 hours. The thesis will involve a major project set by the student's company in collaboration with Cranfield University.

"It is expected that bringing together students from the mechanical power transmission industry will benefit the individuals' broad understanding of activities in the industry and cultivate contacts", said Mr Tom Marsh, the BGA's Technical Director.

"There is keen interest in the MSc course from many BGA member companies and it is anticipated that there will be much demand for the five to six places available this year, like many other industries we are suffering from a shortage of good engineers; we need to encourage students to become engineers and we hope the MSc course will be one way of doing that".

Mr John Vigor, the BGA's Chairman, said establishing the course in conjunction with Cranfield was a major achievement. He said the BGA believed that the course, tailored for gear engineers and designers, was vitally important for the future of the gear industry in the UK.

Tuition fees for the academic year starting in October are »2,675 full time and £1,620 part time. For further information contact Mr Tom Man on +44 (0) 1283 515521. Email: tom@baa.ora.uk
