New composite wear ring materials for pumps

Greene, Tweed & Co. has developed two new, carbon fibre reinforced materials which can significantly increase both mean time between failures and efficiency of pumps.

WR-300 is a carbon fibre reinforced, compression moulded Peek material, while WR-525 is a thermoplastic composite consisting of carbon fibre in a Peek matrix.

Because of their thermal expansion properties, these materials are suitable for use by pump manufacturers and end users as bushings and case or impeller wear rings.

They offer significant benefits over their metallic counterparts, including:

  • High strength equivalent of that of some steels but with the weight of a plastic material.

  • Low coefficient of friction.

  • Impact resistance.

  • Thermal shock resistance.

  • Excellent chemical resistance.

  • Non-galling/non-seizing properties.

These properties increase the efficiency of the equipment by allowing tighter wear ring clearances and decreasing potential pump damage due to cavitation or down-line bearing failures.

The WR-300 material can operate at up to 150°C. The upper temperature capability of 275°C of the WR-525 material has been achieved by the construction of the material. Both materials maintain excellent physical characteristics above their top temperature range.

Both these materials are now available either as machined parts or as tube stock shapes from Greene, Tweed's UK Headquarters in Nottingham.

Greene, Tweed is an international company employing some 850 people worldwide. The company's elastomeric and thermoplastic manufacturing operations are located in the UK and USA with marketing and distribution centres strategically located in the UK, in France, Germany, Japan, Singapore and throughout the USA.
