The early optimism about the development of electronic books has ebbed as difficulties with pricing and compatibility remain intractable. Richard Poynder in Information World Review (May 2002) observes that: "Many in the industry are eagerly awaiting the arrival later this year of the tablet PC". Apparently this has the clearest LCD screen available so far according to Julie Blackwell of Microsoft. But whatever happened to e-paper? This was described by Steve Ditlea in the Scientific American in November 2000. This is a physical book with blank pages that is activated by plugging a suitable downloading connection into the spine. Digital signals convert millions of ink filled globules on the blank pages to black or white. When finished the text is erased and ready for another download. This solves the readability problems once and for all. Replies on progress please to the Editor.
