Elsevier alliance with the African Virtual University

Elsevier Science has announced a new initiative to increase global online access to mathematics, computer science and physics research. Elsevier has formed a meaningful alliance with the African Virtual University (AVU) to offer access on the ScienceDirect® platform. This digital programme provides the foundation for enhanced learning opportunities for today's mathematicians and physicists in an increasingly digital world. AVU has completed a pilot phase during which the virtual university concept has been successfully implemented and tested in 16 English-speaking and ten French-speaking partner institutions across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), and is now transitioning to the operational phase.

The objective of the AVU arrangement is to use electronic distribution to provide wider access to research information wherever and whenever it is needed on a global basis. AVU, initiated by the World Bank, is a first of its kind, technology-enhanced, distance learning network established to serve the countries of SSA.

The agreement with the African Virtual University will allow for free access to 70 ScienceDirect® online mathematics, computer science and physics journals by all AVU member institutions. AVU has transitioned from a World Bank project to establish itself as an independent, non-profit organisation. AVU's delivery model combines an integration of satellite technologies and the Internet that allows it to provide quality educational content from all over the world at an affordable cost, while taking into account the technological and infrastructure limitations prevailing in Africa.
