In terms of size of collections, the National Library of The People's Republic of China is the fifth largest in the world. The total collection consists of nearly 17 million items of which 40 per cent are Chinese materials and 60 per cent foreign materials.

The National Library of China, which is situated in Beijing, has the sole responsibility for the country's book exchange programme. This makes it China's main international book exchange and international interlibrary loan provider. The library has exchange agreements with more than 1,000 libraries and institutions in 100 countries and an interlibrary loan service with about 260 libraries in more than 30 countries. This number has been increasing steadily over the years and it is the aim of the National Library to continue this trend.
