EU executive launches CCS support network

Article Type: News From: International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management, Volume 3, Issue 1

The European Commission launched a network of carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects intended to help its members identify best practice through information sharing. The network is open to the first few large-scale demonstration projects.

To become members, CCS projects must meet the following criteria: they must be operational by 2015 and demonstrate their maturity. Fossil fuel-fired power plants must have a minimum gross production of 250 MWe. Industrial plants must store a minimum of 500,000tonnes of CO2 annually. The other criteria are that the CO2 capture rate must be at least 85 per cent of the treated flue gas stream, and that only projects in the European Economic Area would be able to join. The criteria may be revised as the network develops to allow other projects with valuable experience, says the commission. The new initiative does not intend to duplicate the work of the industry-led zero emissions platform. The network will focus on the needs of “early movers”. Many of them are projects under the European Energy Programme for Recovery. Membership will not facilitate access to EU funding, says the commission.
