Based on his experience of leading a team of mountaineers to the top a Himalayan mountain, distils five lessons about leadership – it requires both technical and social skills; leaders need to recognize the differences between teams and groups; character is as important as techniques; leaders need clarity about their purpose; and they should reward team members for the way they act as well as for what they do. Illustrates this advice by describing characters and episodes from the climb.Article type: ViewpointISSN: 1465-6523Reference: 39BB487
