Purpose – Looks at the future of human resource management within Marks & Spencer, the UK retailer. Design/methodology/approach – Considers the impact that the departure of Keith Cameron, who is the current HR Director, will have on the priority given to human resource management within the organization. Quotes from current and ex-employees about how human resource management is handled within the company and on the advisability of not having a director with direct responsibility for human resource management on the board of directors. Findings – Suggests that human resource professionals will have to work harder to make sure that human resource issues receive sufficient attention at board-level from now on. Originality/value – Comments on recent events at Marks & Spencer. ISSN: 0964-8380 Reference: 37AJ186
