Purpose – Presents some ideas for relieving stress. Design/methodology/approach – Suggests that one way of overcoming stress is by boosting your self-esteem and becoming more assertive; drawing on recent research looks at how by improving attitude and behaviour, stress levels can be reduced. Referring to the relevant literature, identifies some of the positive influences that stress can have on peoples’ lives and records the advice given by counsellor Dr John McEwan for owners, managers and employees in small to medium-sized companies on how to overcome stress. Features those factors that may make the SME legally vulnerable with regard to workplace stress and puts forward how training can be an essential stress preventer and reliever.
