Keywords: Research, Partnerships, Construction industry

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has strengthened its links with the research community by signing a concordat with the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The ceremony took place at Englemere, the CIOB's Ascot headquarters, on Wednesday, 13 October and the concordat was signed by Michael Brown, executive director CIOB Operations, and Dr David Clark, EPSRC's director of engineering and science.

The signing ceremony was preceded by a discussion which explored the strategies and perceptions of the two organizations regarding the construction industry and construction-related research. Current issues and drivers, along with their implications for both the CIOB and EPSRC, were considered in conjunction with the ways in which they might work together The opportunities afforded by electronic means of communications were also highlighted as having the potential to be of particular benefit to the construction industry.

The concordat lays the basis for a stronger working relationship between the two organizations, establishing more formal consultation and communication mechanisms. This will enable the CIOB to have greater input into the development and implementation of research strategies and policies, and to take a lead role in the dissemination of research findings to the industry. The concordat underlines the CIOB's commitment to innovation and research and will help to raise the institute's profile in these areas.
