Lifts and escalators in NHS

Lifts and escalators in NHS

Keywords: Lifts, NHS

Otis plc has put together a unique and innovative lift package aimed specifically at patients in hospitals and clinics. Cutting-edge designs and devices, the first to meet new NHS performance and operational standards, will ensure that the safety and comfort of bed-ridden passengers are taken to levels far above existing standards.

Bill Evans, Otis Group director sales and marketing, said: "Far above all else, the safety and comfort of lift passengers are our main concerns. We recognise that, in the provision of health care, supporting facilities and services, such as lifts, must operate at a level that enhances the quality of patient care. For this reason, we have focused on the needs of patients in transit and designed the lift around them."

Bed-patients, for instance, need never again suffer overhead glare: the lighting is diffused around the car from the operating panel in the side wall. Precision floor levelling removes possible tripping hazards and makes loading and unloading beds easy for staff and comfortable for the patient.

Safety is maximised on entry and exit by means of the Lambda 11 protection system that will reverse the lift doors before contact is made, if any person or object obstructs one of its 56 infra-red beams.

The package is already being installed at the Dartford & Gravesham Hospital in Kent and will be ready for inspection early in the New Year. A total of 16 lifts are also to be installed, including 12 Otis 2000 Bedlifts, and two escalators at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.

The project is due for completion in April 2002 with Otis continuing to provide expert service and support for the 32 lifts and escalators thereafter.
