Library and information services worldwide are still having to face a period of great change, both in the environments within which they have to operate and in the types of services that they are expected to provide. Research must be directed to helping both the practitioner and the user to provide and react to services effectively, but at the same lime research funds for this are having to be stretched. Major trends affecting the scene are examined and current and future research is described, whose results will go towards solving some of the problems.
