Abstract

Until a few weeks ago, when I heard of a managing director of a large firm who asked his technical librarian ‘Why do you go to all this trouble to make your own indexes?’, I should have regarded this as a purely rhetorical question, not requiring a serious answer. It is clear, however, that the ingenious organizer of this Symposium also believes that there are two sides to this question which call for a calm and reasoned discussion. I am, therefore, constrained to set aside all prejudice and view the matter dispassionately.
