Abstract

The circulation system at present in use at the University of Sussex Library uses a single issue slip, in the form of an 80‐column card, to record each loan. The slips are filled out by the borrowers—they give brief author/title information, but the crucial data are the book number and the borrower number. The card and the book are stamped with the date due back (according to the category of the loan) and the cards are later punched with borrower number, book number, and date due. The cards for one day's issue are machine sorted into book number order and then merged with the existing card file representing books on loan.
