Building and using document databases

Abstract

It is reassuring to realise that electronic documents have a permanence which promises to outlive paper. Documents that have existed only as pasted scraps of newsprint, fading photographs, handwritten drafts and the like may now find new longevity as files in computer‐stored document databases.
